The proprietary data formats used by many lab equipment manufacturers makes getting lab results into a single database, in a consistent data structure, challenging. This variation in communication protocols and data structures leads to isolated pockets of data which can only be read by proprietary software, inhibiting full analysis. Many labs continue to reply on pen and paper data capture due to the complexities of digitally interfacing with hardware.

With 40 years’ experience integrating 3rd party laboratory hardware into our custom automation systems, Labman specialise in unifying data into a standardised data format and structure. Our solutions enable lab management software (e.g. LIMS, ELN, SCADA) to interface directly with lab equipment from a variety of manufacturers - cutting out the need for multiple databases or pen and paper results annotation.

With APIs for over 200 pieces of lab equipment and an in-house team of software developers and electronic engineers we can capture data from a range of manufacturers into a single central database.

The Labmax system

A concept solution, codenamed Labmax, uses a combination of hardware and software to tackle the key issues arising from variation in data format and structure. The system comprises two key elements:

Labmax Nanos

The Labmax Nanos are inexpensive micro-PCs that plug directly into lab equipment, convert their proprietary communication protocols into standard open protocols (e.g. MQTT, RESTful API, OPC), apply a standard data structure and broadcast the data to other networked systems. Research equipment from a variety of manufacturers can then be easily integrated into a single database, LIMS system, ELN, SCADA, etc.

Labmax Cores

The Labmax Cores are rugged touchscreen PCs that can be positioned on research benches. These devices manage data coming from the Nanos and append the relevant meta data (user ID, experiment ID, etc) to enable lab management systems (databases, LIMS, ELNs, etc) to store the data correctly.

Users can quickly log into the Core device using an in-built barcode and RFID scanner; ensuring multiple scientists can use the device concurrently.

A single, unified system

1 - Labmax Nanos

These translate the proprietary communication protocols of laboratory equipment into open protocols (e.g. MQTT, OPC, RESTful API), apply a standard data structure and broadcast the data to other networked system, enabling simple connectivity with 3rd party LIMS, ELNs, SCADA or other data storage and analysis tools.

2 - Labmax Cores

These append meta data such as user and experiment IDs to the Nano’s readings and push the data into a lab’s data management system (database, LIMS, ELN, SCADA, etc).

3 - Labman or 3rd Party Database

By outputting in an open data protocol with a clearly defined and well documented data structure, the Labmax system makes it possible to easily capture data from a variety of equipment into a single database, LIMS or ELN for convenient long-term retrieval and analysis.
